Semeru Volcano Explodes In Indonesia’s Java Island, No Casualties Reported

The Semuru volcano has exploded in Indonesia’s Java island, sending hot plumes of ash hundreds of meters into the sky and panicking local villagers even though there are no immediate reports of casualties. Villages in Lumajang district of East Java province were affected, with local disaster management authorities and media reporting that a bridge between two villages had been destroyed as the sudden explosion was followed by thunderstorm and rain.

Speaking to TV One, Thoriqul Haq, district head of Lumajang, said that “Thick columns of ash have turned several villages to darkness”. The Semuru mountain is 3,676 meters tall and had erupted in January this year as well with no casualties.

Indonesia is an archipelago, i.e., a collection of islands, which is located in the volcano and earthquakle-prone zone of the Pacific Ocean known as “Ring Of Fire” which also includes Hawaii (USA), Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, and a hoist of other island nations.
