Supreme Court Halts MCD’s Demolition Drive In Jahangirpuri After Violence

The Supreme Court today stayed the order by the Delhi Municipal Corporation which directed the demolition of ‘illegal’ houses in Delhi’s violence-hit Jahangirpuri. During Hanuman Jayanti, a ‘shobha yatra’ was taken out by Hindu groups which allegedly brandished weapons and made other provocations in Muslim-dominated areas, with some videos even claiming to show mobs gathering outside mosques and pelting stones.

23 people have been arrested so far, and yesterday the Delhi Police seemingly retracted its earlier statement that right-wing Hindu groups VHP and Bajrang Dal were involved.

The court has directed that status-quo be maintained while postponing the next hearing to tomorrow, Thursday. The Delhi BJP chief Aadesh Gupta wrote a letter to North Delhi MCD mayor Raja Iqbal Singh on Saturday, asking that the ‘illegal structures’ built by riot accused and arrested be identified and demolished with bulldozers.

Earlier, a senior civic official had written to the DCP of northwestern Delhi to remoe “organized violations” in the area, and t had also been reported that the PWD, local administrations, police, and departments of North Delhi MCD would be involved in the demolition drive.

The Deputy Commissioner of the North MCD’s Civil Lines Zone had  requested a police force of 400 personnel to “maintain law and order” during the drive.
