UNSC Omits Taliban From Terrorism Statement

The hiatus regarding the status of the Taliban regime remains but appears to be shifting. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in its latest statement SC/14615 on 27th August, released after the bomb blasts as the HKZAI Airport in Kabul, omitted Taliban’s name and instead only stated that “no Afghan group or individual should support terrorists operating on the territory of any country”

The U.N. Security Council is being presided over by India for August. India is a two-year member until December 2022.

The region has been under increased scrutiny after the violent Taliban takeover of the country nearly two weeks ago. Foreign aid and investment has been suspended as the refugee crisis worsens. A faction of the Islamic State based in Khorasan (ISIS-K) had claimed responsibility for triple bomb attacks at the Kabul airport two days ago, which has since been retaliated against by the United States. Significantly, the Taliban is not included in any U.S. government list of designated terror organizations.
