The death toll has reached 9 with 36 people injured in a major train accident yesterday on Thursday in Jalpaiguri when 12 coaches of the Guwahati-Bikaner Express derailed in the evening around 5 PM. There were 1,053 passengers on board the train, according to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The accident occurred near Damohani in the Alipurduar division of the NFR, as per a Railway spokesperson.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the ex-gratia compensations to the deceased’s families and to the injured.

Rs. 5 Lakh in case of death,
Rs. 1 Lakh towards grievous and
Rs. 25,000 for minor injuries.
An investigation into the cause of the accident will be undertaken by Commissioner, Railway Safety.
