Delhi Riots Case: Umar Khalid's Bail Plea Postponed, Verdict On Thursday

According to Bar and Bench, a Delhi court on Wednesday adjourned its decision on activist Umar Khalid's bail application in a case involving communal rioting in Delhi in February 2020.

The order is "under correction," according to Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, who has scheduled the verdict for 12 p.m. on Thursday.

This is the third time Khalid's bail has been postponed after the court reserved its decision on March 3.

The bail order was supposed to be issued on March 14, but the court postponed it until March 21 after the defence counsel failed to file their written representations in the case. After Justice Rawat stated that the court was not ready, it was again postponed to March 23.

Between February 23 and February 26, 2020, clashes erupted in North East Delhi between supporters and opponents of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Khalid was arrested along with several other activists.

The violence took the lives of 53 people and injured hundreds more. Muslims accounted up the vast majority of those killed.

In connection with the Delhi violence case, Khalid and two students from the city's Jamia Millia Islamia University, Meeran Haider and Safoora Zargar, have been accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Zargar was granted bail on humanitarian grounds in June 2020.

The police claimed in their first information report that Khalid gave provocative statements at two protest sites and encouraged Delhi residents to hold street protests during former US President Donald Trump's visit to India, which coincided with the violence in the national capital.
