Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday performed 'bhoomi pujan' of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and the Surat Metro, via video conferencing.
Union home minister Amit Shah, Gujarat governor Acharya Devvrat, chief minister Vijay Rupani and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri were also present on the occasion. Describing the Metro Rail Projects as "important gifts" for Ahmedabad and Surat, PM Modi said that this rail project will help in connecting the two economic centres of the country, Surat and Ahmedabad.

Here are the highlights of PM's address: -
- The PM said the expansion of the Metro Rail Project shows the difference between the work of the previous government and the present government. PM Modi said that before 2014 the metro network was limited to only 225 kms but it has expanded to 450 kms in the last 6 years.
- PM Modi said that work is currently underway in 27 cities across the country on more than 1,000 km of the metro network.
- PM Modi said in his address that the government is working on an integrated system in the country. This means that in any state of the country, the Metro, Bus, and Rail will operate, not with independent design and form, but as a complement to each other.
