Punjab: 297 Stubble Burning Cases In 5 Days, Farmers Say - 'We Are Helpless, Do Not Get Govt Help'

As farmers start burning stubble, pollution levels spike in the surrounding states. 297 cases of stubble burning have been reported in the state from September 21 to 25, said Punjab Remote Sensing Centre Director Dr. Brijender Pateriya. While last year, 197 cases were reported during these five days. Amritsar is at the forefront of burning straw, followed by Tarn Taran and Patiala districts.

Jeet Singh, a farmer who burns stubble, says, "Farmers don't wish to burn stubble, but we are compelled to do it as govt is not providing us with a solution. We asked District administration to take it & dump it, but they didn't take any action. So, finally after 10 days, we burnt it."
