The Joe Biden administration said on Tuesday that it is opposed to expansion of Israeli settlements on the disputed West Bank territory. Reuters has reported that the US administration has termed this move as a setback to the possibility of peace between Israel and Palestine.

Media reports say that the Israeli government has issued tenders for 1300 new homes to be built on the annexed West Bank whereas officials are mulling 3000 such instructions in all.

Commenting on this development, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said "We are deeply concerned about the Israeli government's plan to advance thousands of settlement units"

He further said: "We strongly oppose the expansion of settlements, which is completely inconsistent with efforts to lower tensions and to ensure calm, and it damages the prospects for a two-state solution”.

There have been no reports of Israel responding to the United States’ comments as yet.
