Deepa P Mohana a Dalit research scholar at the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala, is on a hunger strike to protestsince 29th October against alleged caste discrimination on part of the varsity. Indian universities  have long been infested with the problem of casteism, with many student suicides over the year bringing the issue to the fore.

She has been a student of IIUCNN (International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology) at the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, since 2011.
