Frances Haugen was a product manager at Facebook who testified to the US Congress as a whistleblower of what she says are the company's "destructive choices". She said that “Facebook Products Harm Children, Stoke Division, And Weakens Our Democracy”. She further alleged that the company's leadership is willingly ignoring safety on FB and Instagram in favour of profits, and to "grow at all costs".

Haugen said that “Choices Being Made Inside Of Facebook Are Disastrous”, and that demand for changes at Facebook must be made immediately. She called for greater oversight of the social media behemoth along the lines of tobacco and opioid regulations once it was established how harmful these products can be. Facebook “repeatedly” chose its own profits over the safety and wellbeing of its users, contradicting its claims of commitment to the same.

Additionally, she said that  Facebook is a secretive, opaque organization that resists research and scrutiny of its policies and decisions with a "frightening influence" over people's daily lives, psychologies, and behaviours, even for those who are not directly using the platform.
