Even as the controversy over the security breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi enroute to a rally in Ferozepur, Punjab gains steam and has reached the Supreme Court, the SPG security of former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir have been withdrawn by the Centre.

This step has been taken 19 months after an amendment to the Special Protection Group Act under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Adaptation of State Laws) Order, 2020 carried out by the J&K administration at that time.

SPG security had been granted to four Kashmiri leaders and their families: Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah, and Ghulam Nabi Azad. Other than Azad, the three other leaders live in Srinagar where militant and extremist attacks are common, especially over the past few months.
