National Farmers Day is observed on Dec 23 every year to honour the birth anniversary of India’s 5th Prime Minister, Choudhary Charan Singh. Called by many as the 'Champion of India's Peasants', Singh In 1939 brought the Debt Redemption Bill to give relief to the farmers from moneylenders. As the agriculture minister, in 1952, Singh worked for abolishing the zamindari system. In 1953, he got the Consolidation of Holdings Act passed after which pooled landholdings were re-allotted to the farmers in a way that each got a single farm. During his short time as PM (July 1979 and January 1980), Singh worked tirelessly for the welfare of Indian farmers and introduced several welfare schemes for the farmers
