The Cumbre Vieja volcano in Spanish Canary Islands erupted yesterday, spewing laval, ash, and toxic gasses and blanketing the residents with a blackness from the earth’s depths. 7,000 people have been evacuated, while 12,000 homes destroyed. Howver, there are no casualties. 

The eruption is ongoing and new lava streams are continuously falling into the ocean in a magnificent yet frightening meeting of fire and water. The surreal images from the island show the utter destructiveness and haunting beauty of the natural disaster.
