Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar Turns 90 Today
September 28 marks the birth anniversary of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar. That golden voice turns 90 today and on this occasion let’s rewind to some of the unforgettable songs by India's favourite voice:
The Indore-born singer hails from a family of musicians and artists. Born in 1929, her first music lessons began with her father. She started her career in 1942, and in 1949, her first song ‘Aayega Aanewala Aayega’ became a major hit. There was no looking back for Lataji, who went on to sing hits like Jab Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya from Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh from Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960). She went on to become the nightingale of India. In her career spanning over 70 years, she has received many accolades and honours including the Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1989), NTR National Award (1999), Bharat Ratna (2001) and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1993). Who can forget her patriotic song ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon’ in 1963 during the Indo-China war, which moved India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to tears? See the full story here:
The central government is also celebrating Lataji's 90 birthday by bestowing a special honour - 'Daughter of the Nation'. Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the book ‘Lata’ that features portraits from the archives of Gautam Rajadhyaksha, following a day-long session of 91 Hindi-Marathi songs.
