Silent Films In Focus At International Film Festiv
Film as a form originally started as a visual medium which was often an extension of painting and drawing. At that point in time, sound was not part of it.

With the advent of camera, it became something different and this feature of the film viewing experience soon faded out. So, in order to witness the very significance that silent film plays, this year’s International Film Festival of India will showcase three classic silent films by three master filmmakers.

The films include Battleship Potemkin, Pandora's Box and Blackmail.

‘Battleship Potemkin’ is a Soviet silent film (1925) by Russian master filmmaker and pioneer of montage editing Sergei Eisenstein.

The film also received the title of ‘Greatest film of all time’ in 1958 and in 2012, the British Film Institute named it the ‘Eleventh greatest film of all time’.

‘Pandora’s Box’(1929) is a German silent film by German Expressionist Master Georg Wilhelm Pabst. This film is based on Frank Wedekind’s play Erdgeist.

The third film is the 1929 British drama film ‘Blackmail’ by master of suspense and British filmmaker Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock. The film is about a London woman who is blackmailed after killing a man who tries to rape her.

Though silent film form faded out long back, such films are still being made as an experiment. The success of the 2011 French comedy-drama Black and White Silent Film ‘The Artist’ shows how impactful this craft of making movies is, even today. The film was awarded several awards, including five Academy Awards.

The 50th year of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which is often counted amongst the earliest film festivals of the Asian continent, will witness around 200 best films from 76 countries.

More than 10,000 people and film lovers are expected to participate in the golden jubilee edition.
