India Mulls Trump's India Mulls Trump's Request To
Day after the US President Donald Trump urged PM Narendra Modi to consider lifting the export ban on hydroxychloroquine tablets, India is mulling Trump’s request to release more of the drug to the US which has the highest coronavirus cases so far in the world.

“After the call today (Saturday) with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is giving serious consideration to releasing the hold it put on a US order for hydroxychloroquine," Trump was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

“They (India) make large amounts of hydroxychloroquine — very large amounts frankly. And I said — they had a hold because you know they have 1.5 billion people and they take a lot of it, and I said I would appreciate if they would release the amounts that we ordered and they are giving it serious consideration. But India makes a lot of it.” he said.

“I said I would appreciate it if they would release the amounts that we ordered. And they are giving it serious consideration,” he added.

Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malaria drug that some institutions are researching for a possible COVID-19 treatment. Yet there is little reliable evidence that the drug is effective at treating the novel coronavirus.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry amended a previous order last month, thereby placing a blanket ban on all exports of the drug.

“The export of Hydroxychloroquine and formulations made from Hydroxychloroquine, therefore, shall remain prohibited, without any exception,” stated the notification.

However, it is unclear whether the export ban was made before or after two leaders spoke over a phone call on Saturday.
