1.2 Million Have Fled Form Ukraine To Bordering Countries Amid War

The ongoing war with Russia in Ukraine has caused civilian deaths and casualties and the situation of evacuations and refugees has taken centre stage. The UN’s Refugee agency has said that upwards of 1.2 million have fled the country, with the maximum hosted by neighbouring Poland. Poland had come into the spotlight over refugees recently when it accused Belarus of ‘sending’ hundreds of West Asian migrants to its borders, looking for a route into the European Union.

The UNHRC estimates that 4 million people may leave the country as the conflict proceeds, while internal displacement is ongoing as well.

After Poland, Hungary has received the most Ukrainian migrants, followed by Moldova. Russian Federation, the initiator of the present ‘military operations’, has also taken in 4.4% of Ukrainian refugees. From the first day of the operations on February 24^th, the maximum single-day movement of refugees was recorded on March 1^st with 197,081 people, followed by February 27^th when 171,080 refugees were recorded amid the conflict.

Humanitarian Corridor Created After Ceasefire Announcement

Students from India, Pakistan, and African nations are among those looking to evacuate from war affected areas of Kharkiv, Sumy, Lviv, and Pisochyn among others. Today, there was an announcement of a ceasefire in the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha to enable evacuations of civilians and foreign nationals.

Russia has accused Ukraine of forcibly holding foreign nationals and its own citizens “hostage” in the conflict. Its Permanent Representative to the U.N. Vassily Nebenzia offered to evacuate people from the conflict zone. Earlier, Russia had offered “130 comfortable buses” that would leave from Nekhoteyevka near Belgorod, and Sudhza near Kurzk in Russia.

The Indian embassy in Ukraine has announced that 298 students will be evacuated from Pisochyn in the Kharkiv oblast today.

It is now being reported that the ceasefire effort was not successful in Mariupol since the strategic port city remains under fire, as per Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of President Volodomyr Zelenskyy’s office.

At present, Russia is in control of bordering areas of Ukraine: Cherniv, Chernobyl, and Kherson.
