1200 AMU Students Booked Over Anti-CAA Candlelight Vigil
The UP police have registered a case against 1200 people, mostly students, who took out a candle march on Aligarh Muslim University campus in protest against the new Citizenship Law.
Police said the participants did not have permission for carrying out the march on campus and the march was prohibited in view of Section 144 imposed in the district.
On December 23, a candle march was organised on the AMU campus to commemorate the people killed in the ongoing demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The police will now identify these people and take further action. On December 15, a clash broke out between the police and the AMU students protesting against the new Citizenship Act. Police had fired tear gas shells at the protesters which they say was done in a response to the stoning done by the students. After this incident, the campus was evacuated and would be closed till 5 January. The UP police is already facing criticism for its way of handling the CAA protests. While 25 people lost their lives in the protests across the country, 19 of such deaths occurred only in UP. Many people died in the police firing, a charge denied by the police. Police have so far registered 327 cases in demonstrations against the Citizenship Law in the state, in which 1113 people have been arrested and 5558 were taken into custody. Police say 288 policemen are also injured, 61 of them were shot. In addition, 124 people have been booked for inflammatory posts on Facebook, of which 93 notices have been filed and 19409 posts have been blocked on social media: 9372 on Twitter, 9856 on Facebook and 181 YouTube profiles.
