BJP Leaders And The Rise Of Hate Speeches During E
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh - ongoing for 45 days now - a major issue for the forthcoming Delhi assembly elections.

BJP leaders are giving provocative and inflammatory statements, one after the other, against the protests at Shaheen Bagh. Among these leaders are Amit Shah, Home Minister, Manoj Tiwari, Delhi BJP chief and many Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

In Babarpur, Amit Shah said that Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal are opposing CAA and if these people come back to power, Delhi will not remain safe anymore. Shah exhorted people to press the EVM button with such anger that although the button is pressed in Babarpur, the ‘current’ should be felt in Shaheen Bagh.

Anurag Thakur, Minister of State for Finance, went to the extent of asking people to “goli maaro…!” (open fire at…!), thereby engaging openly in violence. While campaigning for BJP candidate Manish Chaudhary from the Rithala assembly seat, Thakur, addressing a rally, said “Desh ke gaddaron ko….” to which the public replied, “Goli maaro saalon ko!” Thakur repeated the slogan again and again, to make sure that the people present there raised this incendiary slogan vehemently.

This is not the first time that a BJP leader has raised such slogans.

Last month, during a pro-CAA rally in Delhi’s Connaught Place, Kapil Mishra had raised the slogan of “Goli maaro gaddaron ko!” (shoot the traitors!), after which the BJP fielded Mishra from Delhi’s Model Town for the forthcoming assembly elections.

Mishra had also posted a provocative tweet recently, in which he had written that on February 8 (polling date), India and Pakistan will clash on the streets of Delhi. However, the Election Commission had rebuked Mishra for this tweet and imposed a moratorium of 48 hours on election campaigning done by him.

Apart from this, Pravesh Verma, BJP MP from West Delhi, used objectionable language and said that there are lakhs of people who have congregated at Shaheen Bagh; the people of Delhi will have to think and decide; they will barge into your homes, defile your sisters and daughters and slaughter them.

Manoj Tiwari, chief, Delhi BJP, has also issued several inflammatory statements. He had recently alleged that people protesting at Shaheen Bagh are raising slogans of “shoot Narendra Modi and Amit Shah!”
