Festival Fervour Across India
With the start of the New Year 2020, festive fervour can be witnessed in various states of the country.
While people can be seen swaying to the beats of the dhol on Lohri in Punjab, Makar Sankranti is being celebrated with much enthusiasm in North India and other parts of the country. The harvest festival of Makar Sankranti is also a time to pay obeisance to the Sun God.
In Tamil Nadu, people are engaged with great gusto in preparations for Pongal, which marks the end of winters and the symbolic ‘arrival’ of the sun. The Pongal fever is raging amid students and others in Tamil Nadu, where it is being celebrated in various colleges. Not just this, several kinds of programmes are also being organised on this occasion. Students say that they wait for this festival the entire year and celebrate it with great ardour. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, glimpses of the state’s culture can be seen during the Tusu festival. The kurmi and tribal communities celebrate this festival with great pomp and ceremony in Jharkhand. After finishing their farming-related tasks, farmers install the Tusu. On Makar Sankranti, the Tusu Chaudal is worshipped and the Tusu song is sung. In Assam, the festival of Bihu is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and these days, the entire state can be seen commemorating it. In Assamese, Bihu is also known as Bhogali Bihu. On this day, people make Assamese dishes such as coconut laddoos, til peetha, suji laddoos and dahi cheera. Farmers harvest their crops on this day and express their gratitude to the gods for their harvest. This festival is celebrated thrice a year, just like farmers harvest their yields three times annually. The first is Bihu, the second is Bohag Bihu and the third is Kongali Bihu.
