Two SITs Constituted To Probe Delhi Violence, Death Toll Mounts To 38
Two Special Investigation Teams (SITs) have been constituted under Delhi Police's Crime Branch to probe the violence in North-East Delhi as death toll mounts to 38. The Delhi Police have arrested 130 people and filed 48 FIRs in the matter.
All FIRs have been transferred to the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police.
Along with one trainee officer of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and one head constable of the Delhi Police, 38 people have died and over 350 people have been injured in violence in north-east Delhi so far. Communal violence in north-east Delhi, which began on Sunday in connection with the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), has now stopped and the situation is under control. However, tensions prevail in violence-affected areas and security forces are deployed in large numbers even now. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expelled its councillor Tahir Hussain from its primary membership after an FIR was registered in the murder of IB trainee officer Ankit Sharma and in a case of arson. However, Hussain has dismissed all charges levelled against him. Amid this, death due to stab wounds has come to light in Ankit Sharma’s post-mortem report. Several stab wound marks have been found on Sharma’s stomach and chest. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that strict action should be taken against the culprits in the Delhi violence case and if someone connected to the AAP is found guilty, he should be given double the punishment. He also said that there should be no politics on the issue of national security. Announcing compensation for victims of the Delhi violence, CM Kejriwal said that the kin of the deceased will get Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh compensation will be paid to people whose houses have been burnt down. Apart from this, he also announced free treatment for the injured in private hospitals. On Thursday, the Delhi Police said in the Delhi High Court that the time is not right for taking action in cases of hate speech.
