Buffalo Meat India's Largest Animal Export
India and the United States have concluded certain agreements on trade in agricultural products. This includes US cherry, alfalfa, and dry distiller seeds, while India on its part will export mangoes, grapes, prawns, and buffalo meat. This was the first time in four years that the two countries came together in a trade policy forum. This also marks the first time that such an agreement was reached at the official level for trade in buffalo meat from between India and the United States.

India has a significant livestock population of buffaloes, goats and sheep, pigs, and poultry that are typically raised for the meat industry. India has around 3,600 slaughterhouses, of which many have been established along modern lines. These are used for meat exports and domestic consumption.

Buffalo Meat Is 90% Of India’s Animal Products Exports!

According to the APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority), there are 34 food processing plants in India, of which 13 are those exclusively meant for meat export. It should be noted that there has been a sudden global jump in the demand for buffalo meat and it alone constitutes 90% of the country’s total animal products exports.

The APEDA states that approval was granted for setting up 3 new plants for meat exports last year itself, which indicates that India may expand its meat exports and the latest agreement with the USA could be a link in a bigger chain.

According to Statista, India exported buffalo meat worth $4.78 billion in 2015, which fell to $3.17 billion in 2020-21. Although this is lesser than the value of meat exported the year prior to this, but India still remains one of the largest exporters of cattle meat since buffalo is included in this category.

In 2020-21, India’s exports in animal products was ₹ 27,155.56 crore, of which buffalo meat alone constituted ₹ 23,460.38 crore ($3.17 billion) , or 90% of the total.

Buffalo Exports: 50% Food Processing Units Situated In Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Punjab are leaders in the international export of buffalo meat. The APEDA website has provided information on 63 such food processing plants, of which 30, i.e., 50%, are situated in Uttar Pradesh alone.

India’s Buffalo Meat Export

Government data tells us that 10,85,619.93 metric tonnes of buffalo meat products were exported in the year 2020-21. The top locations that imported buffalo meat from India are Hong Kong (China), Vietnam, Malaysia, Egypt, and Indonesia and if in the future Idia exports the acceptable standard of buffalo meat then the US will be in this list as well.

India and The US have agreed on cattle meat export four years after a report by the US Agricultural Department which had raised concerns about the qauality of buffalo meat exported by India.

The report titled ‘From The Buffalo Rome : India’s Beef Exports’ had said that buffalo meat exported from India does not adhere to health standards demanded by the market which includes ensuring that the animal is free of foot and mouth diseases.
