For the sixth consecutive day in the country, nearly 10,000 new coronavirus cases were reported while 279 deaths occurred during the period.

According to the Health Ministry's latest update, the total number of infections in the country has increased to 276,583 while the death toll has risen to 7,745.


Meanwhile, the number of active cases has climbed to 133,632.

In the worst-affected state Maharashtra, coronavirus cases have climbed to more than 90,000, followed by 34,914 cases in Tamil Nadu, 31,309 in Delhi, 21,014 in Gujarat, 11,335 in Uttar Pradesh and 11,245 cases in Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research has said that a total of 5,030,700 samples have been tested till June 6 across the country, with 1.4 lakh samples being tested every day.

At present, the samples are being tested in 789 laboratories across the country, of which 553 are government and 231 private laboratories. However, India is among the countries where the COVID-19 screening rate is lowest. According to the Johns Hopkins University data, 3,564 samples are being tested per million population.
