CAA/NRC: Day 46 At Shaheen Bagh
Protests and strikes against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) are on the rise in cities across the country.

Protests by women are underway in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh too and Wednesday is the 46th day of protests there. People are not ready to budge from there despite the cold and rainfall and are continuing with their protests and strikes.

Thousands of people took part in protests and strikes against the CAA, NRC and NPR in Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday as well, when there was mayhem as a man armed with a pistol found his way into the protesting crowds and brandishing his pistol in the air, threatened people to disperse from the site. Later, protesters caught him and handed him over to the police. The man has not been identified so far.

Protests and strikes - on the lines of Shaheen Bagh - against the CAA, NRC and NPR are underway in various cities of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai and Lucknow.

Protests have been ongoing in Rajasthan’s Sikar, where women have been staging a sit-in strike for the past three days. In Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad, Muslim women have been protesting against the CAA.

Meanwhile, facing charges of sedition, along with other serious allegations, JNU research scholar Sharjeel Imam was arrested from Bihar’s Jehanabad on Tuesday. The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police brought him to Delhi on transit remand on Wednesday morning. Demonstrations against Imam’s arrest have begun across the country. Students in Aligarh Muslim University protested against his arrest on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) continue to make objectionable statements on Shaheen Bagh.

After Parvesh Verma, BJP MP from Delhi, now Dilip Ghosh, West Bengal BJP President, has made a controversial comment on Shaheen Bagh.

Earlier, Anurag Thakur, Union Minister, had also given an objectionable speech while campaigning for the Delhi assembly elections. The Election Commission has sent him a notice on that speech and asked for a reply by January 30.
