Delhi: Long Lines Despite 70% ‘Special Corona Fee’ On Liquor
Amid a growing economic crisis during the coronavirus outbreak, the Delhi government has made liquor, petrol and diesel more expensive. The government has imposed a 70% 'Special Corona Fee' on liquor but despite this, long queues can be seen at liquor shops.
In some areas, social distancing norms were also flouted.
In the Jhandewalan area, a crowd gathered at a government liquor shop put social distancing rules on hold. Instead of worrying about being infected with the coronavirus, people kept buying liquor here. In Delhi’s Chander Nagar area, a man showered flower petals on people standing in a queue to buy liquor. This man said that the government does not have money and those buying liquor are the economy of the country. In Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar area, the positions of people in the queue to buy liquor were written on their hands because of which social distancing was made possible. There is a government liquor shop in the Vasant Vihar area, where people gathered in large numbers. Vasant Vihar Sub-Divisional Magistrate has issued a show cause notice to the manager of the shop. Along with increasing the fee on liquor by 70%, the Delhi government has hiked VAT on petrol and diesel as well. On petrol, VAT has been increased from 27% to 30% and on diesel, it has been increased from 16.75% to 30%. After this hike, in Delhi, petrol has become costlier by Rs 1.67 and diesel by Rs 7.10.
