Virus Fear Likely To Dampen Holi Celebrations
The impact of the coronavirus can now be felt on the festival of Holi as well. This year, Holi is on March 10 but celebrations have been dampened amid the coronavirus scare and the colours of Holi are beginning to lose their sheen.
Krishna’s abode Mathura eagerly awaits Holi each year and here, the Barsana Holi and later, the Lathmar Holi have their unique enjoyment. Tourists from India and abroad arrive here in large numbers to see and celebrate it but this year, the coronavirus has affected Mathura’s Holi as well.
Photographs coming in from Mathura show that the number of tourists celebrating Holi there this year has fallen drastically. Traffic SP Brijesh Kumar said, “Each year, lakhs of tourists used to arrive here before Holi but this time, their numbers are very less due to the coronavirus.” The coronavirus, which has played spoilsport in Mathura’s Holi, is affecting Holi celebrations among foreign tourists who have reached Uttarakhand’s Rishikesh as well. Tourists from 73 countries have arrived here to celebrate this festival and forgetting the coronavirus scare, they appear immersed in the colours of Holi. The coronavirus, which has spread across the world, has cast its pall of gloom over the gaiety of festivals as well and people are spending their lives in the shadow of fear. In view of this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cancelled Holi celebrations and there will be no ‘Holi meet’ function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan this year.
