JNU Students Hold Massive Protest Against Fee Hike, Dress Code
Thousands of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a massive protest in Delhi today.
Although the protest had been going on for the past 15 days, today there was a convocation ceremony and the Vice-President and HRD Minister were to attend it. Students stopped them at the ceremony and they could be taken away from there after much effort.
Students say that the government has increased the fees and made studying at JNU so expensive that it will become difficult for poor students to afford it. Lodging-boarding and use of water and electricity in the nation’s well-known university JNU has now become 300 to 900 times more expensive. The university administration did not even speak to representatives of the student union before taking this decision. There are around 18 hostels and 5,000-6,000 students in JNU. According to the new hostel manual, the fees for a double seater room has been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 300 and the fees for a single seater room has been increased from Rs 20 to Rs 600. For the first time, there is a service charge of Rs 1,700 and the Mess Refundable Fees has been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,000. Apart from this, students are also protesting against changes in hostel timings, reduction in library timings and imposition of a dress code. The administration is also increasing this fee by 10% each year. During the demonstration, JNU Students’ Union representatives met HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, who assured them of finding a solution to all their problems and sent out a tweet too. Meanwhile, protesting students are still unmoved and they are saying that they will end their protest after getting a written assurance from the V-C, Proctor, Rector or Dean. JNU students have been protesting against this decision in the campus since the past 15 days. This protest turned aggressive on the occasion of the convocation ceremony on Monday. JNU’s convocation ceremony was being held three kms away from campus in the auditorium of the All India Council for Technical Education in Vasant Kunj. Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu and HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had reached there as guests. They too had to face the protesting students, who say that students from all over India and those who belong to very poor families come to study at JNU. Around 40% students on campus are from families with an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh. If the increased fees is recovered, then such students will have to forego their studies mid-term. Students also say that this decision has been taken in a whimsical fashion and that JNU VC Jagadesh Kumar is not ready to meet them. Watch the full report here:
