Schools In Kashmir Valley Reopen After Months Of Lockdown
Schools in the Kashmir Valley, which had been closed since August 5, 2019, have been opened after nearly six months of lockdown and winter break.
After several months, girls and boys reached their schools wearing uniforms. Along with resuming their studies, all the students appeared eager to meet their friends and said it is their prayer that schools should not shut down again.
There are 11,633 educational institutions in the Kashmir Valley, out of which 810 are middle schools, 247 are high schools and 37 are higher secondary schools. Ten lakh students had taken admission in the higher secondary during the 2019-2020 session, out of which there are 5.29 lakh boys and 4.74 lakh girls. However, around seven months passed in shutdowns and winter vacations. It is the students’ hope that now their session will be conducted properly. Thousands of schools were shut in the Valley on August 5, 2019, when the Central government ended the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir administration tried to open the schools again in October 2019, but students did not reach schools. At that time, the situation was so tense that neither were buses plying on roads nor were mobile phones working properly. Parents were not sending their children to schools out of fear that they might get embroiled in violence.
