60 IIT/IIM Students Took Their Lives In The Last F

The cases of suicide or death in suspicious circumstances have increased manifold among IIT students across the country in the last five years.

Recently, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ revealed statistics of deaths of students in IITs and IIMs, while answering a question on the death of IIT Madras student Fatima Lateef.

The HRD Minister told the Lok Sabha that in the past five years, 50 students in 23 IITs across the country either committed suicide or died in suspicious circumstances. In addition, 10 cases of deaths of students have also come to light in 20 IIMs across the country in the past five years. 

The most number of deaths of IIT students took place in IIT Guwahati, where 14 students died in the past five years. There were 7 deaths each of students in IIT Madras and IIT Bombay. Five students died in IIT Hyderabad, 4 in IIT Delhi, 2 in IIT Roorkee, 2 in IIT Bhubaneswar, 1 in IIT Kanpur, 1 in IIT BHU, 1 in IIT Jammu and 1 in IIT Dhanbad.

The recent cases of deaths of students are from IIT Guwahati and IIT Madras. On November 21, a Japanese exchange student committed suicide in his hostel room in IIT Guwahati.

On November 9, Fatima Lateef, a first-year student of Humanities and Development Studies Department in IIT Madras also committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room. The Central Crime Branch of Tamil Nadu police is now investigating this case.
