Delhi's Jama Masjid To Close Again Until June 30 Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases
Following the guidelines of the Home Ministry, most religious places across the country have been opened from June 8. The iconic Jama Masjid in Delhi was also opened but three days later the mosque has been closed again.
Shahi Imam Ahmad Bukhari announced the closure of Jama Masjid. “After taking public opinion and consulting scholars, it has been decided that from 'maghrib' (sunset) on Thursday till June 30, no congregational prayers will be performed in the Jama Masjid, he said.
The decision has been taken keeping in mind the growing coronavirus cases in Delhi. The way the infections are spreading in Delhi, it can prove dangerous for people to gather anywhere. Recently, the Imams of mosques in West Bengal also said that mosques should be kept closed until the pandemic threat recedes. Even in the northeastern state of Meghalaya, leaders of all religions in a meeting with the Chief Minister agreed that they should wait a little longer to open religious places. At present, 32,810 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the national capital Delhi with about 1,000 deaths.
