Jamia Students Gherao V-C Office, Demand FIR Again
Indignant at police action inside the Jamia Millia Islamia University on December 15, 2019, students gheraoed the office of Jamia vice-chancellor (VC) Najma Akhtar on Monday and demanded that an FIR be registered in connection with the violence on campus.

VC Najma Akhtar said that the police had entered the campus without permission and subsequently beaten up students. She said that the police are not registering an FIR in this matter and now, a complaint regarding this has been filed with the government.

Akhtar said further that the University administration is taking all necessary steps to ensure students’ safety and if needed, they are ready to go to the High Court.

However, students say that they have no faith in the VC’s utterances.

On December 15 last year, Delhi Police had entered Jamia campus in large numbers and resorted to heavy baton charge on students, in which several students were badly wounded.

According to reports, the police had brutally beaten up students who were studying in the University library with batons and caused major destruction of property.

This violent incident had attracted the attention of people across the country. After the violence in Jamia, students and teachers of universities and educational institutions across India had started organising protests, which are going on even today.
