Police Stop Delhi Rickshaw Pullers Headed Towards West Bengal
Trapped by the lockdown, migrant workers including rickshaw pullers are compelled to ride to their hometown in West Bengal due to lack of work in Delhi. However, they were stopped and turned back at the Akshardham flyover by the Delhi Police.
People across the country are hunkering down in their homes due to the lockdown but the migration of daily wagers from capital Delhi and other metro cities continues.
Panchu Mandal, who is a rickshaw puller in Delhi, belongs to West Bengal. He started walking towards West Bengal along with a friend but the Delhi Police sent them back from near the Akshardham Temple. Panchu Mandal says, “The police sent us back. They are saying that we will be sent by bus. We can reach West Bengal in seven days by pulling the rickshaw. We are neither getting any work nor any passengers here.” Trapped by the lockdown, a procession of labourers stretches on National Highway-24 on the Delhi-UP border in a desperate bid to return to their native places. Daily wager Ashish said, “We are coming from Haryana’s Bahadurgarh and have to go till UP’s Etawah district. Our company has shut down and there is no other option but to return home. The distance between Delhi and Etawah is 358 kilometres.” In a bid to reach their homes amid lockdown, thousands of migrant workers reached Ghaziabad’s Lal Kuan after walking from several metros, including Delhi and Gurgaon. All of them want to reach their homes after boarding a bus from here; the UP government has made arrangements for this. At Ghaziabad’s Kaushambi Bus Stand, visuals of mayhem broke out they seemed anxious to find a place in emergency buses arranged by the UP government. Murakim, a resident of UP’s Varanasi works as a daily wager in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur. He said that his mother expired on March 25, the day after the lockdown was announced and so, it is important for him to go to Varanasi. So he started out for Varanasi with two of his friends, Vivek and Praveen. In three days, he has walked from Raipur to Koriya district’s Baikunthpur. Similar conditions can be seen in Maharashtra as well. Despite the curfew, daily wage earners of several states are starting off for their states. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has appealed to the labourers not to leave the state and said that the state government will take care of them.
