Road Accidents: 62 Pedestrians Lose Their Lives Every Day

Walking on the country's roads has become more dangerous in the last four years. 62 pedestrians are killed in road accidents every day in the country, says a report of the Union Transport Ministry, with the most fatalities in West Bengal.
In the last four years, there has been an increase of 84% in number of pedestrians killed in road accidents every day from 34 in 2014 to 62 in 2018.
Government figures show the total number of pedestrians who died in road accidents in 2014 was 12,330, which rose up to 13,894 in 2015. In 2016, this figure was at 15,746. In 2017, such accidents saw the biggest increase and a total of 20,457 pedestrians died in road accidents that year. In 2018, 22,656 pedestrians perished in road accidents. West Bengal, at 2,618, saw the most such accidents. Next was Maharashtra with 2,515 accidents. Andhra Pradesh was third with 1,569 accidents and Delhi was at fourth spot with 420 pedestrians dying in road accidents. In the total number of deaths in road accidents, 15% were pedestrians and 2.4% were cyclists. Despite this, the government has no security arrangements or laws to prevent such deaths.
