Sedition-Accused Sharjeel Imam Arrested In Jehanab
Facing charges of sedition and other serious allegations, JNU research scholar Sharjeel Imam - who made headlines during anti-CAA protests - has surrendered in front of the Delhi Police in Bihar’s Jehanabad.

The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has arrested Imam and is now taking him to Delhi for interrogation.

After the arrest, Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, said that nobody should resort to any action which is against the national interest. Following Imam’s arrest, a court will decide what action is to be taken on allegations against him.

Imam belongs to Kako town in Bihar’s Jehanabad district. After completing engineering from IIT-Roorkee, Imam conducted research in IIT-Mumbai and is currently a research scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

On January 25, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sambit Patra had shared an edited video of a speech given by Imam on social media, following which cases against him had been filed under charges of sedition and other ‘serious’ sections in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, Assam and several other states of the country.

Police forces of many states had been searching for Imam since then. Imam has been accused of giving allegedly provocative speeches.

On January 26, Imam’s mother Afshan Raheem had said that due to the statement attributed to him - which has been presented in a distorted form - the police are threatening and harassing her and other members of her family.
