After A Lull, Auto Sales Pick Up: 215,916 Passenge
The COVID-19 lockdown decimated India’s auto sector but gradually the industry is recovering as 215,916 passenger vehicles were sold in August this year as compared to 189,129 vehicles last year.

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Prakash Javadekar said that there has been a sharp decline in sales of passenger and commercial vehicles this year compared to last year. Where 247,541 passenger vehicles were sold in April 2019, it tumbled to zero in April 2020.


Whereas in May 2020, only 33,546 passenger vehicles were sold as against 226,975 in May 2019. In August, the sale of passenger vehicles caught pace and 215,916 vehicles were sold this year as compared to 189,129 vehicles last year.

Moreover, the sale of commercial vehicles registered a steady decline. The sale of commercial vehicles declined from 208,298 during April-May-June period last year to just 31,636 in corresponding three months this year. Meanwhile, the Central Government has not released the data of commercial vehicles sales for July-August.
