Journalists from regional and national news organisations in Karnataka were up in arms against Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri’s decision to ban private TV channels from videographing proceedings of the house. Journalists are now planning to hold a protest on Friday against the move to restrict the press.

A delegation of media persons met the Speaker to persuade him to withdraw the restrictions that they said “goes against the spirit and ethos of democracy”. However, the Speaker refused to review its decision, saying the ban is temporary and experimental.

Around 50 journalists from print, digital and television news organisations, including from both regional and national organisations, wrote to the Speaker asking him to review his decision.

The journalists plan to hold a protest at the Gandhi Statue in Maurya Circle in Bengaluru on Friday at 9 am.

Some years ago, three BJP ministers had been recorded by a private channel apparently watching pornography inside the Assembly as the proceedings were on. One of those three men, Laxman Savadi, is now deputy chief minister of the state.
