Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti Charged Under Public Safety Act
Ever since the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in August 2019, two former Chief Ministers (CM) of the state, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been under detention. They have been booked under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) even before the six-month duration of their detention got over on Thursday.
With the PSA being applied, both leaders can be sent to prison for three months without trial. A tweet has been posted from the official Twitter handle of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former CM Mehboob Mufti after the PSA was applied.
The tweet says, “Slapping the draconian PSA on 2 ex J&K CMs is expected from an autocratic regime that books 9-year-olds for ‘seditious remarks’. Question is how much longer will we act as bystanders as they desecrate what this nation stands for?” Mehbooba Mufti’s Twitter account is currently being handled by her daughter. Apart from Omar Abdullah and Mehboob Mufti, cases under the PSA have been filed against two more leaders -- National Conference leader and former minister Ali Mohammad Sagar and Mufti’s maternal uncle Sartaj Madni. Both these leaders were under detention since August 5, 2019, and the duration of their custody was also ending on Thursday. Farooq Abdullah, former J&K CM and father of Omar Abdullah, has been kept under detention at his house in Srinagar. A case under PSA was filed against him by the Kashmir administration on September 17, 2019, and his detention had been increased for three months on December 14, 2019. Earlier, on Wednesday, Sajjad Lone of the People’s Conference and Waheed Para of the PDP had been released. This is the seventh time in the past six months that an announcement to release detained leaders was made. On Wednesday, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said that 389 people are in custody under the PSA in J&K. He said that after the abrogation of Article 370 from J&K, orders had been issued to detain 444 people under this Act, out of which 55 leaders have been released.
