Raising 'Azadi' Slogans Is Sedition: Yogi Adityana
Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) are on the rise in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and in various cities of the country, including Delhi.

Women across the country are leading these protests. But now, calling women protesters ‘lesser’ than men, Yogi Adityanath, UP Chief Minister (CM), has engaged in lewd rhetoric against them. His statement makes it clear that he considers women to be inferior to men.

Adityanath was taking part in a rally in support of the CAA in Kanpur. In addition to making vulgar statements about women protesters, he also threatened that raising slogans of ‘Azadi’ will be considered seditious and action will be taken against people raising such slogans.

However, mere sloganeering is not included in the category of sedition.

Courts in the country have already dismissed several cases of treason or sedition filed on account of sloganeering.

Meanwhile, serious allegations are being levelled at UP government and UP Police for taking arbitrary action against anti-CAA protesters.

While toilets were locked in Lucknow’s Ghanta Ghar in a bid to remove women protesters from there, they were also not permitted to erect a tent to keep cold at bay. However, despite all this, women protesters are not ready to budge from the protest spot.

On the other hand, the state police is taking whimsical action in the matter. UP Police has filed cases of violation of Section 144 against around 1,200 male and female protesters so far. Among them are 300 women protesters from Prayagraj, 200 from Etawah and 60 from Aligarh.
