SC Drops Contempt Case Against Rahul Gandhi
The SC has given a big relief to former Congress president Gandhi in a criminal contempt case related to the fighter jet Rafale. On Thursday, the apex court dismissed a review petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi against Gandhi for criminal contempt and accepted his apology. The SC made it clear that no case of contempt will now be heard against Gandhi.
During the 2019 General Elections, Gandhi had directly attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the fighter jet Rafale deal. Without taking Modi’s name, Gandhi had raised the slogan of ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’. In a statement made then, Gandhi had also said that even the SC accepts that ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’.
However, this claim was factually incorrect and in protest, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi had filed a criminal contempt plea against Gandhi in the SC. In her petition, Lekhi had demanded action against Gandhi but the SC dismissed it. The SC accepted the argument of Gandhi’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi that it wasn’t Gandhi’s intention, during political campaigning, to make any comment on the court in any way.
