Violence Visits Valley Despite Claims Of Calm
The Central government is repeatedly making claims of peace being restored in Jammu and Kashmir. During an election rally in Maharashtra, BJP chief Amit Shah even went on to say that not a single bullet was fired in the Valley after Article 370 was abrogated. But these claims are false. Several cases of firing and stone-pelting have been reported in the Valley.
The ruling BJP is raising the matter of removing Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir in the upcoming Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections. On Thursday, in Maharashtra’s Sangli, Home Minister Amit Shah patted the government on the back and said that after Article 370 was abrogated, not a single bullet has been fired in Kashmir.
However, these claims by Amit Shah are not true. After the abrogation of Article 370 in the Kashmir Valley, there have been more than 300 demonstrations and incidents of stone-pelting, in which about 100 soldiers have suffered injuries. In these two months, in a minimum of five encounters, 10 extremists were killed and two soldiers also died. On September 28, there was a 12-hour-long operation in Ramban and in the Ganderbal area too, an encounter lasting several hours took place. In September itself, there was large-scale disturbance due to the death of Asrar Ahmed, a student of Class 11, from pellet gun injuries. On October 5, there was a grenade attack outside the office of Anantnag’s Deputy Commissioner. In light of all this, Amit Shah’s claim, that in the past two months, not a single bullet was fired in the Kashmir Valley and that people are living peacefully there, seems erroneous.
