SC Dismisses Curative Petitions Of Two Nirbhaya Death-Row Convicts
All four accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case will be hanged on January 22 at 7 am after the SC dismissed the curative petitions of two of the four death-row convicts on Tuesday.
The two accused — Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh — had filed the petitions in the SC, which was dismissed by a five-bench judge. The two are now left with no legal options to escape execution but to seek mercy from the President of India.
If the President dismisses their mercy petitions, then the hanging will be done as scheduled. The two other convicts — Akshay Kumar Singh and Pawan Gupta — are yet to file curative petitions. Following the SC’s decision, Nirbhaya's parents expressed happiness and said that they are waiting for the biggest day i.e., January 22. “This is a big day for me. I had been struggling for the last seven years. But the biggest day will be January 22, when they [convicts] will be hanged,” Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi said.
